The University of Manchester

The University of Manchester is the largest single-site university in the UK. With over 38,000 students, more than 12,000 staff and an annual income of £1.01 billion. The impact that the University has through its research, teaching, operation, engagement and people can help lead the way to a truly sustainable world. The Environmental Sustainability Strategy sets out steps to realise this opportunity as part of our third goal of social responsibility. Where we seek to make a difference to society and the environment.

The University’s environmental sustainability vision is for the University to use its full range of knowledge and influence to support a world that is environmentally sustainable. With over 8,000 University owned bedrooms, Savawatt Controls aim was to find the most cost effective reduction of energy.

With this intention the mechanical and energy team successfully applied for the Salix funding. Salix Finance provides interest-free Government funding to the public sector. This funding is to improve their energy efficiency, reduce carbon emissions and lower energy bills.

As a result their funding resulted in the installation of over 1500 Savaplugs, around 50 buildings inside the student accommodation.
